National Geographic

The National Geographic Society, founded in 1888, is one of the world’s largest non-profit scientific and educational organizations, whose mission is to increase our knowledge of the world we live in. In order to achieve this, each day the Society provides information to millions of people through its periodicals, books, television programs, videos, maps and atlases, research scholarships, practical courses for teachers, and innovative educational materials for schools. The Society is funded by the fees of its members, donations, and the revenue from the sale of its educational products. All of which are essential in order to achieve the goal of furthering understanding and promoting conservation of our planet by means of exploration, research, and education.

Since 2001 National Geographic has been an international partner of White Star, which publishes and distributes the Italian editions of several of its more representative works. The most popular books resulting from this prestigious alliance include: the Traveler Guides and the Maps of the World and of the Sky; “Grandangolo – Obiettivi sul mondo”, from The Great Book of National Geographic series; The Treasures of Ancient Egypt, in which the famous Egyptologist Zahi Hawass reconstructs a sort of catalogue of masterpieces belonging to the world’s greatest collections; Le navi perdute di Robert Ballard, dedicated to the history of the great underwater shipwrecks; “Orizzonti Africani”, featuring  photos taken in the Black Continent by the American photographer Robert B. Haas.

This year one of the most exciting projects to come out of the joint venture between the American organization and the Vercelli publisher is the Classics of Adventure series, which is based on bestselling stories of exploration: the diaries of explorers or accounts of the most important stages in humanity’s exploration of the unknown, told by the leading figures themselves and illustrated with period pictures and color photographs. New publications include: “L’Italia al Polo nord”, “Viaggio di un naturalista attorno al mondo”, “Viaggio in Egitto e Nubia”, “Il duca degli Abruzzi”, “Viaggio alle sorgenti del Nilo”.
